Strangest Book Covers and Titles

As an author, you don't get to pick your book cover, you can only hope you get something you love. So for some of the author's below, these covers must have seemed like a total nightmare. Others have simply picked really, really bad titles. All of them are great for a laugh.

Oh, Piers Anthony. One can only ask why? Even if that was a central theme of the book, just...no. This is a case of the author picking a really, really bad title.

After I recovered from my fit of screaming, and upon further examination, I can only conclude that what you are looking at is a crocodile in a dress. Poor bastard (the author I mean, not the crocodile).

It doesn't happen often, but I'm nearly lost for words here. This is weirdly specific. Saddle up? Ahem...

Oh my, they don't beat around the bush, do they? I wonder if the entire title fits on the spine?

                                                      Ew. That is all.

Captain! We're being attacked by a fleet of magical flying dildos!

I think I laughed for about fifteen minutes. Yes, mature of me, I know.

I'm just picturing what led up to this. The author likes one title, the agent another, the publisher another. So they jam them all together, stick in some commas and bam! Awesome title!

Ah yes, the rare and elusive shopping cart in it's natural environment. Careful now, don't get too close! They've been known to run over people's feet.

I hope you've had a laugh at these. Personally some of the covers make me tremble in terror, crossing my fingers and praying to the gods of literature that I won't get stuck with dildos on my cover, or reptiles in night gowns or something.

  1. Omg, LOL, Awesome post! These are all so funny! I can't pick a fave. It's a toss-up between Knitting with Dog Hair and Pooh Gets Stuck, hee hee! How did you come upon these?

    1. I stumbled across one of the really bad titles and it sort of hit me that it would be an amusing blog post. I think Pooh Gets Stuck is my favourite, because I'm mature like that.

  2. I love the covers and shudder to think these authors approved them for their books actually. I would have fired the book cover maker and went to someone with a brain in their head to make a real one for me. Really Now!!! Can we say Joke! There is no way I pore my heart out into a story to only have it ruined by something that looks and is titled like that. No Way! No How!
Great Blog I loved it really I did now that I have stopped laughing at the idiots.

    1. I know, brutal, huh? The funny thing is that the author does have a big say in the story title, so I have no idea what some of them were thinking! The cover you sort of just have to cross your fingers and hope you don't get flying dildos! Teehee!

  3. Knitting with dog hair? How does that work/why would anyone want to do that? But the shopping cart one was the best, LOL!

    I'm sure you'll get a better cover ;)

    1. I sure hope so! lol. Most of the really bad covers are older, I think publishers (for the most part) do a really good job on covers these days.

And knitting with dog hair...nasty! :P haha

  4. The dildo one is by far my favorite one. The shopping cart one is in second, then Pooh Get's Stuck. These are hilarious but it makes me scared that if I ever wrote a book I'd get some weird cover!

    1. I think it's a fear every writer lives with. But hey, if you DO get a bad cover you'll be making funny blog posts about it years down the road! ;)
